Chapter 19

In spite of Davis’ reaction, Zya enjoyed herself at the ballet. It was amusing being dressed in a fine gown, and watch men steal looks at her. Even if it was just another role to play, it was entertaining. Zya was glad that she was not born a great lady though and could not understand how women could abide lives wrapped in corsets and convention.

The ballet did not particularly impress her. She resented the adoration poured upon Caprice and the thunderous applause at the end of the show. She believed the prima ballerina was her own greatest admirer. By the end of the night, Zya was happy to return home and go back to her life of freedom and adventure.

Captain Wyndham and Angus did not return to the cabin after the ballet. They instead accepted the hospitality of Violet and Caprice for the night. When Davis returned the next day, he announced their next raid. “I must go to town once more for reconnaissance, but then we will be ready to strike. This time we will be employing the services of our powder expert, Mr. MacGregor. He will help us take out a railroad bridge just outside of town over Goose Creek.”

Two days later, Davis ventured alone into Parkersburg to finalize details before the next raid. He stopped to speak with Violet about hiding them after the raid, and she invited him to stay and dine that evening. He reluctantly agreed. They lived in several rooms upstairs in the theater. It was small and crammed with ornately carved furniture, heavy drapes and garish porcelain figurines. It smelled heavily of rose water and lavender, and Davis felt as if he was choking when he was there.

Violet, Caprice and Davis were sitting at a round table covered with a heavy tablecloth, drinking coffee after their meal. Violet’s servant had just cleared the dishes.

“You need to seize this opportunity, Captain Wyndham,” Violet said. “Your reputation has taken on mythic proportions. You can exploit this and put even more fear in their hearts, distracting and diverting even more Federals.”

Caprice was not listening. She was trying to catch Davis’ eye, but he was too interested in what Violet was saying.

“Yes, but how?”

“Embrace this image of a phantom,” Violet suggested. “Be theatrical. Give them a glimpse every now and then. Show yourself at a safe distance, perhaps in the shadows or silhouetted on a hilltop well out of range. A bit of dramatic flair can be ever so effective.”

Caprice ran her foot up Davis’ leg, and he flinched, moving his leg away. Davis rose abruptly from his chair, picking up his hat.

“You’re not leaving?” Caprice whined.

“I really should get back.”

“Oh dear, you must need a good night’s sleep. Something you won’t get here,” the girl said with a smirk.

He ignored her comment, finding it vulgar. “Good night and thank you.”

When Davis stepped outside, he took a breath of fresh air. He was angry with himself for getting entangled with Caprice. It satisfied a moment of passion several weeks ago, and now he was sorry.
